Michael Di Giovinazzo
Principal Mining Geotechnical Engineer
SRK Consulting (Finland)
Michael Di Giovinazzo is a Mining Geomechanics Engineer with over 18 years’ experience in hard rock underground and open pit mining operations and projects. After graduating with BSc in Applied Geology from Curtin University, the initial 2 years was with near-mine exploration for gold companies in Western Australia and West Africa. Michael transitioned to mining geomechanics attaining postgraduate qualification from the West Australia School of Mines (WASM). For over 10 years’ he held various geomechanics engineering roles for operating mining companies in Australia across underground and surface mining operations, operational geotechnical team leading, and feasibility studies. This experience incorporated various underground and surface mining methods including SLC, open stoping, deep open pits, managing cave-pit interaction, as well as providing geotechnical planning and guidance of numerous brownfields underground and open pit projects. Consulting experience with SRK’s Nordic offices in the last 8 years’ has been across various commodities, project stages and study levels mainly in the Nordic region, Europe, and Africa. Michael specialises in operations support, geotechnical risk management, geotechnical data collection programs, rock mass characterisation, underground mine design, open pit slope design, ground control monitoring and hazard management. Additional to risk management, developing the role of geotechnics to add value to projects and operations is a core focus of his work.
Maximising the value of exploration and infill characterisation work through the piggybacking of hydrogeological and geotechnical field testing on resource drilling programmes.
